Capitalism and Culture: the acceleration of globalization 

(1945- present) this chapter has to do with the history of capitalism. to start off the chapter Strayer brings up a woman named Memey. She is from Java in Indonesia and had a rough life. her husband died and she was left to raise her son alone. to provide for her family she heard about a job in Malaysia so she came to the country illegally and met her "contact person" who was supposed to get her the waitressing job. The man who came to get her took her to get makeup and clothes then all of a sudden she was taken to a hotel where she realized she was being used for sex trafficking, not for a waitress job. She was too afraid to run away. Then a "sympathetic client" helped her escape. Memey, later on, found work with an organization helping stop sex trafficking. She came back home and was reunited with her son. but she obviously suffered from a lot of terrible memories that will stick with her for the rest of her life. Memey was not the first and not the last victim of international networks of sex trafficking. "those networks represented one dark and tragic thread in a vast  web of political relationships, economic transactions, cultural influences, and the movement of people across international borders that linked the world`s separate countries and regions, binding them together more tightly, but also more contentiously"(Strayer, 1023). 
When referring to the viewpoint of world history: "the genealogy of globalization reached far into the past, The Arab, Mongol, Russian, Chinese, and Ottoman Empires; the Silk Road, Indian Ocean, and trans-Saharan trade routes; the spread of Buddhism, Christianity, and especially Islam- all of these connections had long linked the societies of the Eastern Hemisphere, bringing new rulers, religions, products, diseases, and technologies to many of its peoples." (Strayer, 1024). 
In 1919-1946 the League of nations pact was created. 1945 United Nations, world bank, and International Monetary fund was established. The 1960s An organization of Petroleum exporting countries was established. In 1962 Silent Spring (written by Rachel Carson) was published. The book is about environmental issues. Then in 1963 Betty Friedan writes and publishes The Feminine Mystique. 1967 the Arab- Israeli war broke out (a 6-day war).  1970 Greenpeace was established. 1973 to 1974 OPEC members (Arab) set an embargo on oil to the West. Then 1979 convention on the elimination of all forms of discrimination against women adopted by the UN; Iranian revolution. 1982 Took place was the Law of Sea Convention (international agreement about the uses of World Oceans). 1994 North American Free Trade (NAFTA) enacted. 1995 the World Trade Organization was established. 1997. Kyoto protocol on Global warming was created and introduced. september 11th, 2001 attacks on the World Trade Center and Pentagon took place. Then in 2008, The global economic crisis starts up. 2011 Osama Bin Laden was killed under the presidency of Obama. 2013-2014 The Islamic State, a radical jihadist organization, proclaims a new caliphate in parts of Syria and Iraq. Also what took place in 2014 was Tunisia`s new constitution enshrines many rights of women. The World Bank declares China the worlds largest economy. People`s Climate March in conjunction with the UN-sponsored Leaders Climate Summit. 


Feminism 
This chapter says a lot about the lives of females in other countries. The Globalization of Liberation: Focus on feminism, more specifically in the WEST and the SOUTH. Looking at the west, women had an "organized feminism" but in the 1920s it lost it's momentum. "when many countries in western Europe and North America had achieved women's suffrage. The south As women mobilized outside of the western world during the 20th century. In Asia, Africa, and Latin America, the predominant issues-colonialism, racism, national independence, poverty, development political oppression, and sometimes revolution- were not related to gender.
