Revolution, socialism, and Global conflict- The rise and fall of world communism
(1917-present)
A quote that stood out to me relating to communism was "In the century communism had been greeted with enthusiasm by many people - in Russia, China, Cuba, Vietnam, and elsewhere- as a promise of liberation from inequality, oppression, exploitation, and backwardness" (Strayer, 929). This shows the beginning of communism and how it started off as a positive thing. The people of the country thought it was the solution to all their countries problems. The leaders of these nations convinced the people it was the right thing to do. These leaders kind of answered all their prayers.
Global Communism
Looking at modern communism, for example, found its philosophical roots in the 19th century. All of the ideas regarding communism came from Karl Marx. Looking at all of the communist countries involved it all started off with the Soviet Union`s revolution.
----"communism also referred to a final stage of historical development when social equality and collective living would be most fully developed, largely without private property. Socialism was intermediate stage along the way to that final goal" (930, Strayer).
Communism "prompted a global rivalry between the united states and the Soviet Union for influence in the Global South. The order of the communist revolutions in Vietnam who took over Cambodia, Latin America specifically Cuba who went hand in hand with the Soviet Union. The Soviet Union took over Afghanistan, Philippines, Malaysia, Indonesia, Bolivia, and Peru. By these countries revolting, it started a path of communism.
Russia: Revolution
The Russian revolution took place in only a year. the year of 1917. The history behind this revolt is that WW1 made the Russians lose hope. The leader of Russia was the famous Tsar Nicholas II. He was forced to abdicate the throne, which led to the end of the Romanov dynasty (ruled for 3 centuries). After this historical event, the people of Russia really felt the change. The social party "The Bolsheviks" became huge and were eventually called the communist. The communist`s goal was to crush countries like the United States, Japan, France, and Britain because they did not support communism. The lower classmen would join the Red Army and fight for communism. This lasted for the next 25 years. "The Soviet Union remained a communist island in a capitalist sea"(935, Strayer).
China: Revolution
30 years after the Russian revolution China decided to revolt. A little communist group called the CCP followed Marx`s views just like Russia. They believed in the Urban working class. This little group became a big group, led by Mao Zedong. He was a charismatic leader that the people put on a pedestal. He was a hero to the Chinse people. He overthrew the government and took control of China.
Later on in this chapter communist feminism became a key discussion. In communism believe it or not woman were kind of equal. Until things got all messed up with the leaders. (Keyorganisation called Zhenoted)
The Cold war
After the second world war, the U.S. and the Soviet Union were the world’s most confident nations (superpowers).Though they had different ideas about economics and government they would fight a war called the Cold War. The Soviet Union was a communist country.
The Cold War started off in Europe after World War II. The Soviet Union seized control of Eastern Europe. Germany and half of Germany’s capital, Berlin were controlled by the Soviet Union. The United States, Britain, and France controlled western Germany and West Berlin. In June 1948, the Soviet Union blocked roads and railroads that led to West Berlin. The United States, Great Britain, and France flew in needed supplies to the people (Berlin Airlift).
Problems during the Cold War
After World War II: Korea was divided (north and south). North Korea communist. South Korea capitalist country. North Korean army invaded South Korea. South K needed help so the United Nations came in to help. Since China was communist they sent soldiers to help North Korea. In 1953 the war ended. Neither side won. Korea is still divided to this day.
The U.S. and Soviet Union were in a nuclear arms race. Cuba became a communist country and the S.U. put missiles in Cuba without the U.S. knowing( 1959). President Kennedy was afraid the Soviet Union would attack Flordia. He said the US would go to war if they did not remove the missiles. He hoped this blockade would work. (Cuban Missile Crisis). Then the Soviet Union removed the missiles... Thank God!
