Chapter 17 Summary
This chapter was about the modern industry in Europe. The industrial revolution took place around 1750-1900. "it drew on the scientific revolution and accompanied the unfolding legacy of the French revolution to utterly transform European society and to propel Europe into a temporary position of global dominance" (738). Also brought up was the Agricultural revolution. This was the time where humankind used the "natural world" to their advantage. People would use things like c"coal, oil, grass, and the nucleus of atoms". This all began in western Europe. Western Europe led the world to a transformation that shapes our world today.
Then strayer goes on to explain the industrial revolution. It all took place in the 19th century. Key places (western Europe, China, and Japan). Mostly in Europe was where modern change started taking place. Later in the chapter, it explains why Europe was the first. It was most prepared. Then more specifically Britain. It explains why Britain was ahead of the game in modernizing. Going forward, the British aristocracy is mentioned to be the majority of Britain ( wealthy landowners ). Then the middle class: "this middle class contained extremely wealthy factory and mine owners, bankers, and merchants. Such rising businessmen readily assimilated into aristocratic life, buying country houses, obtaining seats in parliament, sending their sons to Oxford or Cambridge University, and gratefully accepting titles of nobility from Queen Victoria"(747). Then to the laboring class. This class was the "majority if Britain`s19th-century population".
Now on to the United states industrialization, but not using socialism. The US came up with their own way to make their country modern. Then on to Russia`s industrialization and revolution. Then the industrial revolution and Latin America (after independence) in the 19th century. All of these countries had to find their own ways of making their nations the best.
